Excursions: Digging Day

Saturday, June 30, 2012

As I've mentioned in the past, I love digging for records and I think record collecting is one of the best hobbies out there. Some of the best record stores I've ever come across reside in Brooklyn, New York (I'm aware that I've been spending a bit of time in BK) and the ones I went to on Monday were no different. Although Brian, my friend Alex, and I ventured to a total of 3 record stores, Dope Jams is unfortunately closed on Mondays, meaning we awkwardly stood outside of the locked door staring inside. However, the ones we actually made it to -- Academy Records and Fool's Gold -- made the trip totally worth it.

Miami Heat: 2012 NBA Champions

Tuesday, June 26, 2012

Ok, so this post was inevitable. I am a die-hard Miami Heat fan circa 2000, around the time of the legendaryAlonzo Mourning. To be honest, those are the earliest memories I have of loving the Heat so I won't claim that I was a fan any earlier than that. Probably doesn't matter much though: In 2000, I was in the 2nd grade and I knew as much about basketball as the rules of Knockout or Around the World. Regardless, I clearly remembered screaming at the top of my lungs in the kitchen with my mom back in 2006 when we won the championships for the first time in franchise history when I was watching us destroy the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday to win the championships for the second time. The only reason I wasn't screaming like I was 6 years ago was because my roommates were dead asleep and had work the next morning; it had nothing to do with the fact that I am a grown 20 year old woman now...because that is completely irrelevant. The second we won, I called my mom and begged her to send Brian and I NBAChampions t-shirts and any sort of news articles relating to the win. The package should be arriving shortly. Long story short:
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE MIAMI HEAT, NBA 2012 CHAMPIONS!!!

Here are some pics from their celebrations over the past few days, including immediate post game pictures and a video of the parade from today!

Song of the Day: A Kind of Mathematics

Thursday, June 21, 2012

(So sorry about the late post people. I have a real excuse this time though. The combination of Blogger acting up and the internet in my apartment sucking led to the delay of this post. It was honestly ready last Tuesday.)

If you know me, or actually took the time to read the little "about me" part of the welcome section of this blog, you know that I hate math. I don't hate math for the sake of hating math, though. I hate it because it hates me; we just don't go well together. But of course, leave it to Mos Def/Yasiin Bey to get me to love his kind of Mathematics. Off his classic album Black on Both Sides, "Mathematics" is one of the prime examples of how complicated and intricate a true lyricists lines can be. I could get into how amazing and unique Mos Def's word play in this song is, but that's only half the reason why I posted this as today's song of the day. As I was listening to this song on the subway ride home from practice, I paid close enough attention to the small inserts of a recognizable sample at ____ . Turns out it's from Erykah Badu's "On and On" off her classic album Baduizsm. But of course the madness doesn't stop there. Turns out Badu's sample appears at the same time in "Mathematics" as it does in the original song: 2:20 exactly. Check it out -- I'm not even lying.

Some people think that the timing is probably a coincidence, right? I highly seriously doubt that. There is literally no way that it is a coincidence. I refuse to believe it because it's just not true and if there comes a time where someone wants to play the devil's advocate to my stance, I have no problem doing some research to investigate in the name of good music.

Excursions: Meatballs, Anyone?

Sunday, June 17, 2012

Brooklyn never ceases to amaze me. Well actually, Bedford Ave never ceases to amaze me. I had the biggest craving for BBQ last weekend and after making the treck all the way down to Berry St. to realize that the place didn't even open for lunch, Brian and I realized that The Meatball Shop wasn't exactly what you'd call a bad back up plan. At all. Hit the jump for pictures of what the menu is telling you I got. The checkmarks on the menu are my order. Yes, I got a meatball hero and a slider on the side. Judge me.

The images you are about to see are of some of the most delicious sandwiches ever made by man. It will make you crave a meatball sub. Viewer discretion is advised.

Stop, Forward, Rewind, Play

This is a total throw back and it deserves to be posted. I remember the day Brian told me about this classic performance. It was January of 2010 and I was in the car at a tournament in Miami  due to a mini rain delay. He sent me the link to this video via Facebook and I'm almost certain I watched it7 times that day. Weirdly enough, when I went to the Columbia Preview Weekend (back in the day when I was a pre-frosh), not only did I meet Sciryl at the poetry event at the IRC (home of CUSH), I ran into him at the Times Square subway stop a few months later. I'm a huge fan of his and you should definitely check out his music, Youtube channel, or anywhere that features his stuff because this guy is good. I never got the chance to meet Riva, but she seems like a cool girl. Anyways, this poem easily goes into my top 5 all time favorite Def Poetry performances because it's just so unique and it's something I've never seen before. You'll agree once you watch the video. I promise.

And We Can Feed Ourselves, Too

As it turns out, not having a meal plan is hard. I don't know how real people in NYC eat everyday if they don't just go to a restuarant every night. And to be perfectly honest, it makes sense that I always associate New York living with Chinese take-out containers. Luckily, Brian and I are weirdly obsessed with the food network and know enough about cooking to play around in the kitchen and make some food for ourselves. Here's a little glimpse into our cooking endeavors; I'll be sure to post a few more with recipes attached!

Mozzarella Stuffed, Egg-Topped Turkey Burgers with Greens

Spiced Turkey Meatball Lentil Soup with Shredded Mozzarella

Lemon Chicken Piccata with Roasted Aparagus

Ok, call me crazy but as obsessed as I am with peanut butter and pineapple separately, I was certain that these two would go great together. I even Googled it just to be sure. Turns out peanut butter and pineapples are a delicious snack combo. The first couple bites are weird but when you get the taste for it, it's so addicting. Speaking of peanut butter, Brian and I went through a jar in 2 days...and I don't even feel bad/embarrassed about it. Welcome to living on your own.

Welcome to Our Humble Abode

We didn't get past here. He was disappointed with himself.

'Twas a far way down...
I'm just going to post this and act like I haven't completely disappeared for the past month or so. If there's any excuse in the world for my absence, it's that I have officially moved to NYC for the summer and it's been so hectic/insane/stressful/amazing that I needed a month or so to get my life in order (not really, but I needed to come up with something). Well to start off, these pics are from the back fire escape of our giant apartment -- not only for NYC standards, but for general apartment standards, this place is pretty big. Brian had some trouble getting to the roof, which we have access to from our fire escape. Wanna see if he made it? And more amazing pics of our new life in NYC? Hit the jump for more!
